In contemporary society, we experience a lot of suggestions as to how we can be happy and healthy. There are often competing narratives: your doctor has a perspective, your counsellor has a perspective, your family member has a perspective, your pastor has a perspective, and your best friend has a perspective.
While the people in your circle of contacts may all be well meaning, it can be very hard to know which ideas to believe and which person is right. It can be the case that a person will be drawn to believe whoever they are in closest contact with. This is understandable as we tend to contact the most those we trust the most, but also dangerous if they do not necessarily know best.
What do you do when no one in your circle of contacts seems to have the advice that you know in your heart is right for you?
The answer is that you can find your doctor, your counsellor, your family member, your pastor, and your best friend in God alone. All you need to do is approach Him in humility and ask Him to fulfill those roles for you. Even if you don’t ask, He may do so anyway, such is His gracious and loving nature.
If you speak with perhaps five to ten people on the phone each day, that’s a lot of influence to process, which can lead to a lot of confusion. If you are on social media and interact with dozens of people, images and ideas each day, that’s even more to process, and even more potential confusion.
Consider elevating God to the position of the One who can meet all your needs. You will find that while human beings always err, God is the perfect mentor in every respect. He’s just a prayer away.
